Conservation

The information that will be obtained thanks to the research that we will conduct in the south and south-east Gobi, in addition to the information also obtained by the other teams and researchers who studied and are presently studying the Mongolian Wild Ass in this area, will serve to define and implement management recommendations that will permit to find a compromise between the long term survival of this sub-species and local breeding activities, while considering needs and difficulties of the local population.

Thanks to this research we could also have a better knowledge of the behavioural ecology of the Khulan, its water sources use, nature of interactions between Khulans, livestock, other wildlife and humans activities at water sources and the surroundings, nature of relationship between herders and Khulans, and nature of threats affecting the survival of the Khulan. It will be also possible to show the existence of an illegal poaching of Khulan for meat, with a parallel market in landscapes and  at the chinese border. It will be also possible to increase knowledge on the potential use of some Khulan’s organs in traditional medecine.

Thanks to the results obtained from our research, the implementation of appropriate conservation actions for the Mongolian Wild Ass conservation and the informatioin, growing awareness and education of local people to biodiversity conservation and natural ressources management, will be possible.

Our first aim being to permit the success on the long term of this project, to resolve conflicts between local people and Khulans, as well as an optimal management of natural resources for the population, livestock and wildlife.
