. Research and actions conducted during the summer 2008

Les recherches que j'ai pu conduire cet été à titre individuel, avec mes propres moyens complétés par une aide de 1 600 Euros de la Société des Amis du Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, furent limitées faute de financements suffisants et à cause de conditions climatiques et de terrain assez difficiles. Il me fut cependant possible de recueillir un certain nombre d’informations d’importance sur le statut actuel du Khulan et les menaces pesant sur sa survie. Ces informations furent recueillies grâce à l’interview de la population locale et des spécialistes des aires protégées du Sud Gobi et de mes observations personnelles. Il me fut également possible de réaliser un grand nombre d’observations sur l’écologie comportementale et la biologie de cette sous-espèce, de concrétiser des coopérations pré-existantes avec des chercheurs et professionnels mongols, d’initier une coopération étroite avec les professionnels et guides des aires protégées du Sud Gobi, ainsi que d’initier le projet d’éducation et d’implication de la population locale à la protection de la biodiversité de la Mongolie.

Ce projet fut très bien accueilli par la population locale dans la grande majorité. Même par des personnes qui au départ étaient totalement hostiles à la protection du Khulan car considérant cet animal comme le principal compétiteur avec leur bétail pour l’accès aux ressources naturelles.  La très grande majorité des familles rencontrées nous ont témoigné une forte volonté de coopération et d’implication dans ce projet. Certaines de ces familles ont été sélectionnées pour la mise en place d’un projet communautaire futur dans le Dornogovi aimag et des cahiers leurs ont été distribués afin de leur permettre d’y enregistrer leurs observations tout au long de l’année. Ce projet communautaire sera complété par d’autres actions lors de la prochaine mission et dans le futur.

I am leaving for Mongolia for my holiday, from the 21st of June to the 9th of September, to start research on the Mongolian Wild Ass behavioural ecology in the south Gobi and permit the implementation of the "Mongolian Wild Ass conservation" project since the autumn 2008. A student from the National University of Mongolia and the driver of the jeep provided by the Mongolian Ornithological Society will join me in the field.  

 My aims  are to:

     .study and create new local partnerships for the association with: research institutions, local NGOs, governmentale institutions, the staffs of the Strictly Protected Area of the South Gobi, communities projects, etc. ;

      .consolidate partnerships already existing and proposed, and to define with them new strategies of actions and functionning since october 2008 ; 

       .start research on the behavioural ecology of the Mongolian Wild Ass and collect information about threats affecting its survival (in the south Gobi and on markets), and on nature of relationships between this sub-species, livestock, other wildlife and humans;

       .interview the local population, start to involve some families and persons to our project and study its faisability and adaptations to consider for the next missions, and to look for persons and families interested in working with us in the future ; 

      .set up contacts for the creation and implementation of activities and tools for the information and education of the local population living in the south Gobi ; 

      .as well as to establish contacts and collect information needed for the implementation of support to local activities in this area of Mongolia.   

These results will be online here in October.

The french association : Société des Amis du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle de Paris donated me in 2004,  1 600 Euros to conduct research on the Mongolian Wild Ass. I will use it this summer to start research on the behavioural ecology of the Mongolian Wild Ass in the south Gobi.
